The wild hamster almost died out in the Netherlands. If actions will not take place soon, then it is over with this little beast. From May 10 thru May 16, 1999, well known Dutch people will watch a little (corn) field near Heer (area of Maastricht) in the province Limburg. Here this little animal, also known as the corn wolf, still can be found.

Nature lovers like Koos van Zomeren, Hans Dorrestijn and environment professor Lucas Reijnders want to attention to the wild hamster with their presence. And to persuade minister Apotheker (Ministry of Agriculture) to take action very soon. Writers, poets and artists will be present during daytime and nighttime. Members of the Parlement also will come.

According to the association Badger and Tree there are only a handfull wild hamsters left. The Ministry of Agriculture says there are a few hundred. According to a spokesman of "Das en Boom" this is a much too optimistic valuation.

Also in Heer, where the watch will be held, are -according to "Das en Boom"- the wild hamsters not safe. The fields offer not much protection against predators and daily there are "many grabbing dogs".

Assistant Secretary , Faber (of Agriculture) announced half April a special protection plan for the corn wolf. According to "Das en Boom" that will take too long. It is now time for action, according to a spokesman.

De wilde hamster is in Nederland bijna uitgestorven. Als er niet heel snel iets wordt gedaan, is het afgelopen met het beestje. Bekende Nederlanders houden daarom vandaag tot en met zondag een wake bij een akkerveld in het Limburgse Heer bij Maastricht waar het diertje, ook bekend als de korenwolf, nog voorkomt.

Natuurliefhebbers als Koos van Zomeren, Hans Dorrestijn en milieuprofessor Lucas Reijnders willen met hun aanwezigheid de aandacht vestigen op de wilde hamster en minister Apotheker (Landbouw) overhalen om op zeer korte termijn in te grijpen. Schrijvers, dichters en kunstenaars zullen zowel overdag als 's nachts aanwezig zijn. Ook is de komst van Kamerleden aangekondigd.

Volgens de vereniging Das en Boom zijn er nu niet meer dan een handvol wilde hamsters over. Het ministerie van landbouw houdt het op enkele honderden. Een veel te optimistische schatting, zegt een woordvoerder van Das en Boom.

Ook in Heer waar de wake wordt gehouden, zijn de wilde hamsters volgens Das en Boom niet veilig. De akkers bieden weinig dekking tegen roofdieren en er worden dagelijks "veel grijpgrage honden uitgelaten".

Staatssecretaris Faber van Landbouw kondigde half april een speciaal beschermingsplan aan voor de korenwolf. Volgens Das en Boom duurt dat veel te lang. Er moet nu iets gebeuren aldus de woordvoerder.
